Team Scherr Grabs Top Spot in East
ML5 teams Jockeying for Playoff Position
The final week of the 2004 Major League 5 Pin regular season is shaping up to be a nerve-wracker. Morden's Ron Scherr won all seven of his individual matches Sunday in Carman and, along with partners Ian Sylvester and Fern Kerr, collected 27 of a possible 35 points to take over first place in the Eastern Division. Scherr and company swept their final three opponents with scores of 761, 793 and 794. They are now 3.5 points ahead of the second-place Wilson squad, which had led the division since October 24th. Carman's Ken Wilson fired a seven-game total of 1942 (277 average) and went 6-and-1 last weekend to help keep his group within striking distance of top spot. The other Eastern Division team, captained by Randy McFarlane of Carman, is just 2.5 points behind the Wilsons and six back of the front-running Scherr threesome. McFarlane rolled an 1895 (270 average) on Sunday and collected five more wins, bringing his league-leading total to 29.
Meanwhile, what was once a 13.5 lead in the Western Division is down to 6.5. The trio of Bill Boorman, Brad Ball and Ted Popadynetz remains on top but Dave Mansell's Minnedosa squad is mounting a late charge. Mansell and teammates Tracy Swift and Robert Hendry earned 23 points on Sunday. Team Clisby is a distant third in the West, 26.5 points out of first.
The Major League 5 Pin regular season comes to a close on Sunday, December 12th (1:00 p.m. start) at Recreation Lanes in Brandon with another seven games of interleague play for each of the eight squads. The top two teams from the Western Division, top team from the East and a wild-card team will qualify for the playoffs.
